Abstract
This 2014 report from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction presents information on trends and developments in the drug situation in Europe. Highlights of the report include the following: while estimates of global heroin production remain high, heroin indicators have been stable and trending downward; while deaths related to heroin have fallen, deaths related to synthetic opioids have increased, such as the large number of deaths in Estonia associated with the use of fentanyls; European Union (EU) Member States have seen an increase in the use of new psychoactive substances that can be difficult to detect and monitor; and the increase in domestic production of cannabis combined with the size of the cannabis market suggest that the drug is being used as a cash generator for organized crime groups. Data for this report were obtained from information supplied by EU Member States sources and amounts of drugs coming into the market, types and amounts of drugs used in the European Union, drug use and drug-related problems, and health and social responses to drug problems. The report also highlights drug policies enacted at the national and international level. Tables, figures, and annex
