This report presents 1990 police statistics, prosecution and court statistics, and corrections statistics for member states of the Council of Europe.
Abstract
Police statistics address offenses recorded by the police, police data on characteristics of suspected offenders, the number of police staff, and police expenditures. The offenses covered are homicide, assault, rape, robbery, theft, and drug offenses. Prosecutions and court statistics are in two parts; the first deals with the role of the prosecutor in each country, and the second focuses on convictions and sentencing by the criminal courts in each country. Corrections statistics pertain to prisons, community care, and recidivism. Statistics on prisons address the number and capacity of the prisons for each country, prison populations as of September 1, 1990, and the characteristics of imprisonments. Other corrections tables encompass corrections expenditures, the number in community care, and information on recidivism studies for each country. Data are also presented from the international crime surveys of 1989 and 1992, which allow international comparisons of victimization, reporting behavior, fear of crime, and public opinion about crime. The final chapter provides data on historical trends in reported crime (1987-93). Extensive tabular data
