Nine drug abuse prevention and treatment programs partially funded with Federal Anti-drug Abuse Act grant funds administered by Volusia County (Fla.) were evaluated with respect to the perceptions of their strengths and weaknesses as reported by a wide range of community members.
Abstract
The programs included the Edgewater Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program, the Daytona Beach DARE Program, the Lake Helen DARE Program, the Ormond Beach DARE Program, the Prime Time Parent Program, the Offender Re- entry Program, the Serenity House Criminal Justice Evaluator, the New Smyrna Beach We Care Program, and the West Volusia Police Athletic League Program. Results revealed that the four DARE programs provided the 127-week curriculum to about 21.4 percent of all county 5th graders during the 1991-92 school year; approximately 12 percent of the children in kindergarten through grade 4 received visits from DARE officers. The programs were functioning well, although outcome data are not available. The other programs, which focused on juvenile drug treatment with parent involvement, aftercare for drug-abusing offenders, screening and assessment of drug-abusing jail inmates, a police athletic league, and a program offering counseling and recreation for high-risk youth.
