CRIME HAS BEEN CUT AND CITIZENS FEEL SAFER, REPORTS A STUDY EXAMINING PROGRESS OF SPECIALIZED ANTICRIME POLICE PATROLS.
Abstract
THE PURPOSE OF THESE SPECIALIZED PATROLS, DUBBED COMSEC, FOR COMMUNITY SECTOR TEAM POLICING, HAS BEEN TO REDUCE CRIME AND IMPROVE POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS. OVERALL, THE PROGRAM HAS MET WITH EXPECTED AND UNEXPECTED SUCCESS. THE CONCEPT INVOLVES USING PATROLS WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY IS FOR ALL POLICE SERVICES WITHIN A GIVEN NEIGHBORHOOD. INFORMAL INTERACTIONS AND INCREASED COMMUNICATION BETWEEN TEAM MEMBERS IS STRESSED. A ROLE IS DEVELOPED WHERE OFFICERS PERFORM INVESTIGATIVE AND PATROL FUNCTIONS. THE SURVEY FOUND THAT CITIZENS FELT SAFER WITH COMSEC PATROLS. THERE WAS A DECREASE IN BURGLARIES, ROBBERIES, AND AUTO THEFTS IN COMSEC AREAS.
