This two-study evaluation of Tuning In To Health: Alcohol and Other Drug Decisions (TITH), a drug prevention program for elementary schoolchildren in Manitoba, assessed changes in student knowledge about substance abuse and surveyed teacher satisfaction with the program design and implementation.
Abstract
The first study used a pre- and post-test design with nearly 1200 students, while the second study surveyed 500 elementary school teachers. The findings indicate that, while students had a high initial knowledge level, they gained a statistically significant amount of knowledge in urban schools and in grades three through five in rural schools; the program was most effective with students who began with a low level of knowledge about chemical abuse. Approximately 20 to 30 percent of teachers in Manitoba were using the program and/or had received in-service training; the program was generally well received among teachers. 7 tables and 28 references
