A FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF 2,178 BLACK AND WHITE MALES ADMITTED TO 25 VARIOUS DRUG ABUSE REPORTING PROGRAM'S (DARP'S) TREATMENT AGENCIES WAS CONDUCTED IN 1975-76, FINDING BOTH METHADONE AND DRUG-FREE THERAPIES TO BE EFFECTIVE.
Abstract
THE MEN WERE IN METHADONE MAINTENANCE, THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES, DRUG-FREE TREATMENTS, AND DETOXIFICATION PROGRAMS. A COMPARISON GROUP WAS BASED ON PERSONS WHO COMPLETED FORMAL ADMISSION BUT NEVER RETURNED TO RECEIVE TREATMENT IN DARP, (THE INTAKE GROUP). DRUG USE (OPIOID, NONOPIOID, MARIHUANA, AND ALCOHOL), EMPLOYMENT, AND CRIMINALITY WERE COMPARED BEFORE AND AFTER DARP TREATMENT. OPIOID USE DECREASED IN ALL GROUPS, BUT MORE SO IN METHADONE MAINTENANCE AND THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES WHILE NONOPIOID USE DECREASED IN ALL BUT DETOXIFICATION PROGRAMS. MARIHUANA USE INCREASED IN METHADONE MAINTENANCE GROUPS, AND ALCOHOL USE INCREASED IN ALL GROUPS EXCEPT DRUG-FREE TREATMENTS. EMPLOYMENT INCREASED IN ALL GROUPS EXCEPT DETOXIFICATION PROGRAMS WHILE THE ARREST RATE DECREASED IN METHADONE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMS. A HIERARCHICAL ANALYTIC MODEL WHICH CORRELATED TREATMENT OUTCOMES WITH BACKGROUND VARIABLES, DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES, AND PRE-DARP TREATMENT HISTORY SHOWED THAT THE MOST FAVORABLE POST-DARP OUTCOMES WERE ASSOCIATED WITH EVERY TREATMENT GROUP EXCEPT DETOXIFICATION, AND THAT THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES HAD SIGNIFICANTLY FAVORABLE OUTCOMES ON FACTORS RELATED TO DRUG USE. THIS STATISTICAL REPORT CONTAINS CHARTS, EXPLANATIONS OF STUDY METHODOLOGY, REGRESSION ANALYSES, AND REFERENCES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) (GLR)
