A SAMPLE OF 59 JUVENILE ALCOHOL OFFENDERS AND THEIR PARENTS WERE STUDIED TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM CONDUCTED IN THE SECOND DISTRICT JUVENILE COURT OF UTAH.
Abstract
THE STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO INVESTIGATE A NUMBER OF FACTORS, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING: (1) TO COMPARE THE RECIDIVISM OF PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS WITH THE RECIDIVISM OF A CONTROL GROUP TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROGRAM IN REDUCING ALCOHOL OFFENSES, (2) TO DETERMINE IF ATTITUDES WERE ALTERED BY THE PROGRAM, (3) TO DETERMINE IF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ALCOHOL WAS ALTERED BY THE PROGRAM, (4) TO DETERMINE IF A RELATIONSHIP EXISTED BETWEEN ATTITUDE AND RECIDIVISM, (5) TO DETERMINE IF A RELATIONSHIP EXISTED BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE AND RECIDIVISM, AND (6) TO DETERMINE IF A RELATIONSHIP EXISTED BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES ABOUT ALCOHOL. DATA WERE COLLECTED REGARDING ALCOHOL RECORD, ALCOHOL ATTITUDE SCORES, ALCOHOL KNOWLEDGE SCORES, AGE, SEX, EDUCATIONAL LEVEL, SCHOOL DISTRICT, RACE, EMPLOYMENT STATUS, FAMILY INCOME, MARITAL STATUS, ACADEMIC RECORD, PROBATION STATUS, RELIGION, PARENTS' MARITAL STATUS, LIVING SITUATION, FAMILY SIZE, AND PREVIOUS TOTAL COURT RECORD. THE STUDY GROUP CONSISTED OF 29 ALCOHOL OFFENDERS AND THEIR PARENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE 5-SESSION PROGRAM AND 30 NONPARTICIPATING ALCOHOL OFFENDERS AND THEIR PARENTS SERVING AS CONTROLS. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN REDUCING RECIDIVISM FOR ALCOHOL OFFENSES, THAT ATTITUDES ABOUT ALCOHOL WERE NOT ALTERED BY THE PROGRAM, THAT ATTITUDES ABOUT THE FAMILY WERE NOT ALTERED, THAT THE PROGRAM WAS SUCCESSFUL IN INCREASING THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ALCOHOL, THAT THERE IS A NEGATIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RECIDIVISM AND INCREASE IN KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ALCOHOL, AND THAT THERE IS A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATTITUDES ABOUT ALCOHOL AND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ALCOHOL FOR THE CONTROL GROUP MOTHERS AND A NEGATIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE TWO VARIABLES FOR THE TREATMENT GROUP FATHERS. THE SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE AND A PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ARE APPENDED. REFERENCES AND TABULAR AND GRAPHIC DATA ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--KBL)
