A POLICE LIAISON PROGRAM IS EXAMINED AS A METHOD OF IMPROVING THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' IMAGE OF LAW ENFORCERS.
Abstract
BEGINNING FROM THE PREMISE THAT THE AMERICAN PUBLIC HOLDS THE COMMUNITY POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN LOW ESTEEM, THE POLICE LIAISON PROGRAM ATTEMPTS TO INFORM STUDENTS OF THE NEED FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT AS WELL AS ENCOURAGE YOUTHS TO SHOW RESPECT FOR LAW ENFORCERS. REPORT FINDINGS SHOW LESS DETERIORATION OF PRO-POLICE SENTIMENT IN SCHOOLS WHICH HAD PARTICIPATED IN POLICE-SCHOOL LIAISON PROGRAMS THAN IN THOSE WITHOUT ONE. EQUALLY PERCEPTIVE FINDINGS ARE DISCUSSED AND ILLUSTRATED ON CHARTS. THE STUDENT ATTITUDE TOWARD TEACHERS IS BALANCED AGAINST THE ATTITUDE TOWARD THE POLICE COUNSELORS.
