EVALUATION OF A NEIGHBORHOOD BURGLARY PREVENTION PROGRAM BY EDUCATING RESIDENTS IN A TARGET AREA ABOUT CRIME PREVENTION TECHNIQUES AND SUPPLYING TRAINING AND EQUIPMENT TO DECREASE THEIR CHANCES OF BEING VICTIMIZED.
Abstract
MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE PORTLAND (OR) BURGLARY PREVENTION PROGRAM INCLUDED MEETINGS OF CITIZENS TO DISCUSS PREVENTIVE TECHNIQUES, ENGRAVING OF PROPERTY LIKELY TO BE STOLEN, AND DISPLAYING A DECAL WARNING THAT POSSESSIONS ARE ENGRAVED AND CAN BE TRACED. THE EVALUATION WAS CONDUCTED TO ASSESS THE EXTENT OF BURGLARY REDUCTION FOR PARTICIPATING HOUSEHOLDS AND EXAMINE OTHER CONSEQUENCES OF THE PROGRAM. DATA WERE COMPUTED BY CALCULATING THE PERCENTAGE OF HOMES WITH STICKERS WHICH WERE BURGLARIZED ONE OR MORE TIMES AFTER THE STICKERS WERE DISPLAYED. IT WAS FOUND THAT HOMES DISPLAYING STICKERS TENDED TO HAVE LOWER BURGLARY RATES THAN HOMES THAT DID NOT. PROGRAM PARTICIPATION WAS ALSO FOUND TO HAVE INCREASED PARTICIPANTS' INCLINATION TO REPORT BURGLARIES.
