The Addiction Severity Index (ASI) and Socrates, an instrument designed to measure stage of change, were used to evaluate 56 individuals admitted to Recovery Acres, a 35-bed male residential recovery program in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Abstract
Composite scores from the ASI indicated major problems in the areas of employment, alcohol use, family-social functioning, and emotional health. The Socrates stage of change instrument revealed 27 percent were in preparation, 67 percent were in action, and 6 percent were in maintenance. Patients left Recovery Acres either through relapse or to follow a nonresidential program. Follow-up of 26 cases demonstrated residents showed statistically significant improvements in alcohol and drug abuse, family-social functioning, and emotional health. Employment, medical, and legal problems, as identified by ASI composite scores, were significant indicators of negative outcomes. Employment remained a problem 3 months after admission for most residents. Stage of change did not predict outcome in terms of abstinence or residential status. 3 references and 8 tables
