The effect of personal and vocational counseling programs was determined for 50 battered women who sought assistance from a women's protective service in a southwestern city.
Abstract
Over a 2-week period, abused women participated in a treatment program comprised of five modules designed to address important skills related to spouse abuse. These included cognitive restructuring therapy, self-assertiveness development, communication skills training, problem solving training, body awareness, and vocational counseling. The participants were divided into three groups: a control group and two groups with the COPSystem Interest Inventory with or without the Sixteen Personality Factors Questionnaire. The group with the COPSystem Interest Inventory administration and interpretation showed significant improvement within group measures from pre- to post-treatment in anxiety, hostility, assertiveness, and self-esteem. However, the group with the COPSystem Interest Inventory and the Sixteen Personality Factors Questionnaire utilization did not show significant improvement in any of the measures. Future research needs to assess whether implementation of the learned skills changes the abusive relationship or situation. 5 tables and 39 references (Author abstract modified)
