THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THREE ELEMENTS WHICH INFLUENCE THE ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TREATMENT FOR SEXUAL OFFENDERS.
Abstract
CONSIDERED ARE THE DEFINITION OF TREATMENT NEEDS, THE PURPOSE AND DIRECTION OF TREATMENT, AND THE BASE EXPECTANCY CONCERNING DURATION, INTENSITY, AND SEVERITY OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR WITHOUT TREATMENT EFFECTS IS MADE DIFFICULT BECAUSE MOST TREATMENT HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON A HIGHLY SELECTIVE BASIS (MORE ACCORDING TO JUDICIAL DECISION-MAKING AND PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS THAN THE NATURE AND SEVERITY OF PROBLEMS) AND BECAUSE RECIDIVISM RATES ARE GENERALLY VERY LOW IN ANY CASE.
