AN EVALUATION, DATED AUGUST 1974, OF THE DETERRENT EFFECT OF NEBRASKA'S DRUG EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR THOSE CONVICTED OF POSSESSION AND/OR SALE OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES.
Abstract
INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED WITH A SAMPLE OF COUNTY JUDGES, INSTRUCTORS OF DRUG EDUCATION, AND OFFENDERS TAKING THE COURSE DURING A THREE YEAR PERIOD DISCLOSED THAT SUCH DRUG EDUCATION DOES NOT ACT AS A DETERRENT TO ILLICIT DRUG USE. NONETHELESS, THE LARGE MAJORITY OF OFFENDERS AND INSTRUCTORS BELIEVED THE PROGRAM HELPED SOME OFFENDERS AND SHOULD BE KEPT, BUT CHANGED. THE GREATEST AREAS OF DISCREPANCY IN A COMPARISON OF INSTRUCTOR AND PARTICIPANT RESPONSES CONCERNED THE INSTRUCTOR'S ABILITY TO RELATE TO OFFENDERS AND HIS KNOWLEDGE OF DRUGS. APPENDIXES CONTAIN QUESTIONNAIRES AND DATA CHARTS.(AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...TWH
