This guide, which is to be used in conjunction with the five-part video series, "Everybody's Business: Drug-Free Schools and Communities," instructs facilitators in the delivery of a 10- to 15-hour staff-development program for adults who work with youth.
Abstract
"Everybody's Business" was funded by the U.S. Department of Education to test the feasibility and effectiveness of distance-learning technologies in implementing drug-use prevention and intervention. The video series includes lectures from individuals and panels of experts, interspersed with activities that participants completed by themselves, in pairs, or in small groups. During the broadcasts, participants had the opportunity to speak directly to panel members by phone to ask questions or clarify content. In this facilitator's guide, a discussion of program implementation addresses the target audience, facilitator responsibility, time allowed for the course, the advantages of cosponsorship, and ways to evaluate the training. A section on preparation for the training sessions lists the equipment and supplies needed and provides two sample room layouts. The discussion of how to conduct effective workshops provides tips on adults as learners and practical guidelines for workshop procedures. Information on the sessions addresses the format of the videotapes and the participant's workbook sessions, along with special requirements for two of the sessions. An overview of each of the five sessions is followed by suggestions for adapting the training to participant needs. Topics considered in the five sessions are risk and protective factors in drug use, proactive prevention that builds resiliency in youth, healthy beliefs and clear standards that combat drug use, when prevention becomes intervention, and practical ways to involve youth in constructive activities. Appended promotional flyer, rules for brainstorming, ground rules for small groups, program evaluation, and pretraining and posttraining questionnaires
