This video dramatizes how school peer mediation groups work in the context of conflicts between elementary students while they are at school.
Abstract
The video opens in the home of an elementary age boy as he is playing in his room before school. His sister comes in his room and takes away the airplane with which he is playing, breaking it in the process. He chases his sister out of the room, and she complains to their parents. The parents chastise the son without bothering to find out what has happened. The son is then portrayed on the school playground playing basketball alone. One of his friends comes over and wants to play with the basketball, too. An argument ensues as both grab the ball and attempt to wrest it from the other. A group of student playground conflict mediators comes up to the two boys and persuades them to submit their conflict to the mediation process. The mediation process is dramatized, as both boys give their view of the dispute, express their feelings, and respond to the mediators' requests to devise a solution. The two boys "brainstorm" ideas for a solution. They finally decide that they will divide the time left in recess, with each boy playing with the basketball an equal amount of time.
