USING A QUESTION AND ANSWER FORMAT, THIS TEXTBOOK INTRODUCES ELEMENTARY STATISTICAL CONCEPTS, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE USE OF ANALOGIES AND METAPHORS TO EXPLAIN CONCEPTS WHEREVER POSSIBLE.
Abstract
THE BOOK IS DESIGNED FOR USE BY COLLEGE STUDENTS IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES, ESPECIALLY THOSE FEELING PANIC OR HOSTILITY WHEN CONFRONTED WITH QUANTITATIVE MATERIAL OR CONCEPTS. IT IS INTENDED AS A SUPPLEMENTARY TEXT, AS AN INTRODUCTION, OR AS A REFERENCE BOOK. THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS FOCUS ON THE BASIC VOCABULARY OF STATISTICS AND VARIOUS LEVELS OF MEASUREMENT. CATEGORICAL MEASUREMENT IS DISTINGUISHED FROM QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENT. SIX CHAPTERS ON DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS DISCUSS MEASUREMENT, CENTRAL TENDENCIES, MEASURES OF DISPERSION, AND REGRESSION AND CORRELATION TECHNIQUES. THE NEXT SIX CHAPTERS INTRODUCE HYPOTHESIS TESTING. TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE PROBABILITY, PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS, THE NORMAL CURVE, SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION, TESTS, TESTING AND ESTIMATION WITH A SINGLE SAMPLE, AND DIFFERENCE OF MEANS AND THE F DISTRIBUTION, AND ONE-WAY ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE. THE LAST TWO CHAPTERS DISCUSS NONPARAMETRIC TESTS OF HYPOTHESES AND TRADITIONAL NONPARAMETRIC MEASURES. TABLES, FIGURES, REVIEW QUESTIONS FOR EACH CHAPTER, CHAPTER REFERENCE LISTS, ILLUSTRATIONS, AN INDEX, AND FOUR APPENDIXES PRESENTING HISTORICAL NOTES, STATISTICAL SYMBOLS, ALGEBRAIC OPERATIONS, AND TABLES OF STATISTICAL INFERENCE, ARE INCLUDED.
