EVALUATION OF THE PRESENT STATUS OF POLICE TRAINING AND EDUCATION AT THE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY LEVEL IN THE UNITED STATES.
Abstract
A HISTORY OF POLICE TRAINING AND EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES IS PRESENTED TO EVALUATE THE FACTS CONCERNING COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY LEVEL POLICE TRAINING. OTHER DATA WAS COLLECTED FROM CATALOG MATERIAL OF INSTITUTIONS WITH POLICE TRAINING AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND THROUGH CORRESPONDENCE AND PERSONAL CONVERSATIONS WITH ADMINISTRATORS AND OTHER PERSONS RELATIVE TO SUCH PROGRAMS. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY INDICATE THAT THERE EXISTS A 'CORE' CURRICULUM AT ALMOST ALL OF THE INSTITUTIONS OFFERING POLICE EDUCATION AND TRAINING. MANY OF THE TWO-YEAR INSTITUTIONS BASE THEIR CURRICULA UPON REQUIREMENTS ESTABLISHED BY STATE LAW FOR CERTIFICATION AS A PEACE OFFICER IN THAT STATE. THE FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONS WERE FOUND TO PROVIDE LIBERAL ARTS COURSES IN THEIR LAW ENFORCEMENT CURRICULA. THE AUTHOR NOTES THE NEED FOR MORE LIBERAL ARTS COURSES IN IN-SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAMS TO PROVIDE THE POLICEMEN WITH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF PEOPLE RATHER THAN JUST KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOOLS OF HIS TRADE.
