THE DEGREE OF RELIABILITY DISPLAYED BY POLYGRAPH EXAMINERS WHEN IDENTIFYING, AS OPPOSED TO INTERPRETING WAS INVESTIGATED AND FOUND TO BE HIGH.
Abstract
JUDGMENTS BY TEN EXPERIENCED EXAMINERS WORKING INDEPENDENTLY ON ACTUAL CASES MATERIAL INVOLVING RESPONSES TO 2,530 QUESTIONS FROM 40 POLYGRAPH INTERVIEW CASES WERE EXAMINED. A HIGH DEGREE OF CONSISTENCY WAS FOUND IN THE ABILITY OF THESE EXAMINERS TO IDENTIFY WHETHER A PHYSIOLOGICAL REACTION OCCURRED (CARDIOVASCULAR, RESPIRATORY, AND/OR GALVANIC SKIN RESPONSE). THE OVERALL PERCENTAGE OF AGREEMENT ACROSS EXAMINERS, FOR ALL POSSIBLE JUDGEMENTS WAS 95 PERCENT: 66 PERCENT FOR CARDIOVASCULAR RESPONSES; 93 PERCENT FOR GALVANIC SKIN RESPONSES; AND 96 PERCENT FOR RESPIRATORY
