This book describes 9 exemplary and 33 promising programs, selected by a 15-member expert panel, which promote safe, disciplined, and drug-free schools.
Abstract
This publication was developed by a panel, established by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement, in 1998. There are seven criteria, under four criteria categories, for judging which programs to recommend to the United States Department of Education in order to provide teachers, administrators, policymakers, and parents with information to aid in their efforts to improve the quality of student learning. The evaluation criteria and indicators used for selection were evidence of efficacy, quality of program, educational significance, and usefulness to others. The exemplary programs that were selected emphasized alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention; combined building social competencies, violence prevention, and treatment programs; and tobacco abuse prevention. The promising programs are identified by name with some emphasizing violence prevention and building social competencies; others emphasizing a combination of building social competencies, violence prevention, and alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention; and others emphasizing tobacco abuse prevention. The programs selected ranged in varying coverage for various combinations of grades from kindergarten through grade 12. Information given for each program includes costs, materials, and training requirements; duration/intensity of program session length and frequency; and grade level covered. Each program is described in some detail with professional development resources and program costs, program quality, and evidence of efficacy being listed. Contact telephone numbers and mailing addresses for each program are available at the end of each section.
