THESIS THAT THE EXTERNAL REINFORCEMENT APPROACH TO BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION USED IN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR INSTITUTIONALIZED DELINQUENT YOUTH IS NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS INTERNAL REINFORCEMENT.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR ARGUES THAT EXTERNAL REINFORCERS ARE TOO INDIRECT AND SUBJECT TO VARIABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY ENCOURAGE THE STUDENT TO BECOME SELF-MOTIVATED. HE CITES FOUR DIFFERENT PROGRAMS IN USE IN PENNSYLVANIA WHICH UTILIZE INTRINSIC FORMS OF REINFORCEMENT. THESE PROGRAMS ALL USED A CROSS-DISCIPLINE, THEMATIC APPROACH IN THE DESIGN OF A CURRICULUM TO FIT BOTH THE INDIVIDUAL INSTITUTIONS AND THE PARTICULAR NEEDS OF THE RESIDENTS.
