This volume describes 99 innovative local criminal justice program initiatives, including the 10 that received awards in the 1993 competition sponsored by the National League of Cities.
Abstract
The programs were selected because they provide practical and novel policy or service delivery approaches. The programs focused on a wide range of public and public-private partnerships in crime prevention, law enforcement, courts and adjudication initiatives, and corrections programs. Law enforcement programs focus on community policing, a citizen police academy, the use of cable television as a community policing measure, team policing, community crime prevention programs, and a community resource and prevention center. Programs focused on youth included prevention programs, a summer youth camp, a peer jury, a gang task force, a child sexual abuse response team, and a school resource officer program. Other programs include a drug law enforcement team, a drug prevention program, a day treatment center, a drug court, a community service project, and projects using technology in efforts to address domestic assault and other issues. Each program is described in terms of its background, components, results, and contact person.
