A policy panel report prepared by Join Together is discussed that contains recommendations on how to expand drug addiction treatment and recovery, and facts, action steps, and ideas that can be used by communities to fight drug abuse are provided.
Abstract
The report contains six recommendations: (1) treatment for alcoholism and other drug addiction must be covered as health benefit on an equal basis with treatment for other diseases; (2) limited access to treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction requires a broad-based national campaign to educate the public and build political support; (3) research on the nature and treatment of drug abuse must be expanded; (4) education and training on the nature of drug addiction and recovery must be required for all health, mental health, social service, and justice system professionals; (5) treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction must be monitored by independent treatment managers; and (6) diagnostic, treatment, and long-term recovery must be integrated in a coordinated strategy to reduce alcohol and other drug problems. Facts about drug abuse and treatment are provided that identify problems caused by drug abuse and various treatment modalities. Guidelines and ideas are offered to help communities treat and prevent drug abuse problems, convene local panels, and build alliances. Resources available to communities in expanding treatment options are listed.
