This report lists the activities and progress from July through December 1998 on project to expand the DNA analysis capabilities in the Illinois State Police forensic sciences laboratory system.
Abstract
The project was funded by a grant from the Office of Justice Programs of the Department of Justice. Activities took place at laboratories throughout the State. Activities included the development and expansion of DNA testing, expansion of the database, ensuring of quality standards, development and validation of new DNA testing methods, and education of courts and police personnel on the use of forensic DNA testing. The report cited specific progress in the areas of training, personnel certification in the use of the new procedures, the use of a case acceptance policy, the use of robotic equipment for analyzing offender samples, external proficiency testing of DNA analysis, and the establishment of a troubleshooting team.
