REPORT ON A VARIETY OF THERAPEUTIC METHODS APPLIED IN WEST GERMAN JUVENILE PRISONS.
Abstract
AFTER A SHORT HISTORICAL SUMMARY THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES A NUMBER OF EXPERIMENTS IN CRIMINAL THERAPY INCLUDING BEHAVIOR-THERAPY, GROUP COUNSELING AND PSYCHOANALYTICAL GROUP-THERAPY. SPECIAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE PRISON SETTING ARE DISCUSSED, SUCH AS RESTRICTIVE PRISON REGULATIONS AND FREQUENT CHANGE OF GROUP COMPOSITION. IT WAS FOUND THAT PSYCHOANALYTICAL GROUP THERAPY WAS UNFIT FOR USE IN PRISON. POSITIVE EXPERIENCES WERE GAINED WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOCIOTHERAPY. IN ORDER TO GET A STARTING POINT FOR EVALUATION, A NUMBER OF PRISONERS AND WARDENS WERE ASKED TO COMPLETE A QUESTIONNAIRE WHICH YIELDED DATA INCLUDING THE FACT THAT TWENTY PERCENT OF THE RESPONDENT PRISONERS THOUGHT THAT THERAPY WOULD CURB RECIDIVISM AND SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT OF PRISONERS AND WARDENS ANSWERED THAT THERAPY WOULD HAVE A POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON PRISONER-WARDEN RELATIONS. --IN GERMAN
