AN ATTEMPT TO PREVENT BURGLARY INVOLVED THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, THE CITIZENS, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES.
Abstract
HOME SECURITY MONTH INVOLVED AN INTENSIVE INFORMATION CAMPAIGN AIMED AT MAKING RESIDENTS AWARE OF THEIR HOME SECURITY RISKS, PROVIDING FREE HOME SECURITY CHECKS BY LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, AND RECEIVING RECOMMENDATIONS FROM LOCKSMITHS AND HARDWARE DEALERS FOR CORRECTING DEFICIENCIES UNCOVERED IN THE CHECKS. THE RESULTS INDICATED 20 PERCENT FEWER BURGLARIES THAN ANTICIPATED. THE FINDINGS SHOW THAT REQUESTS FOR HOME SECURITY CHECKS APPEARED TO BE RELATED TO INCOME LEVEL - THE HIGHER THE AREA INCOME, THE GREATER THE NUMBER OF REQUESTS FOR CHECKS. AMONG THE CONCLUSIONS WAS THAT PREVENTION IS LESS COSTLY IN MONETARY AND HUMAN TERMS THAN INVESTIGATION, APPREHENSION, AND CONVICTION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
