The effectiveness of crime analysis and situational crime prevention in preventing shoplifting was studied in 1991 in nine retail stores in Great Britain identified in a prior study as having high shoplifting rates.
Abstract
Electronic tagging was introduced in two stores, store redesign in two stores, and a uniformed guard in two stores. The other three stores received no intervention and served as controls. Shoplifting was measured the week before the intervention, the week after, and 3-6 weeks later. The results revealed that electronic tagging caused a lasting decrease in shoplifting. Store redesign caused an immediate decrease that was wearing off after 6 weeks, and the uniformed guard had no effect on shoplifting.
