AN ATTEMPT TO ASSESS SEX OFFENDERS WITH RESPECT TO DEMOGRAPHIC, PERSONALITY, AND SOCIAL FACTORS, INCLUDING THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE OFFENDER AND HIS VICTIM.
Abstract
CASE RECORDS OF 501 SEX OFFENDERS, WHO HAD UNDERGONE PRESENTENCE EVALUATION FOR POSSIBLE COMMITMENT UNDER THE WISCONSION SEX CRIMES LAW, WERE STUDIED IN AN ATTEMPT TO ISOLATE SOME OF THE FACTORS INVOLVED IN THE COMMISSION OF SEX OFFENSES. A MAJOR FOCUS OF THE STUDY WAS UPON COMPARING THOSE SEX OFFENDERS RECOMMENDED FOR SPECIALIZED TREATMENT VERSUS THOSE CONSIDERED NOT IN NEED OF IT. THE RESULTS SUGGEST, ON AN IMMEDIATE LEVEL, THAT SOME OF THE ASSAULTIVE SEX OFFENDERS MIGHT BEST BE HELPED BY ENCOURAGING THEM TO RESTRUCTURE THEIR STYLES OF LIFE IN SUCH A WAY AS TO AVOID SITUATIONS WHERE A COMBINATION OF INTOXICATION AND AVAILABILITY OF POTENTIAL SEXUAL OBJECTS MIGHT LEAD TO A NEW OFFENSE. OTHERS MAY REQUIRE HELP IN UNDERSTANDING AND DEALING WITH THEIR AGGRESSIVE FEELINGS IN A MORE SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE MANNER THAN BY SIMPLY ACTING THEM OUT. IN THE CASE OF NONASSAULTIVE SEX OFFENDERS, THE TREATMENT MIGHT MORE PROFITABLY FOCUS UPON CLARIFYING AND REDUCING THE INTERPERSONAL CONFLICTS AND FEELINGS OF INADEQUACY WHICH PROMPTED THEM TO SEEK RELATIONSHIPS WITH INAPPROPRIATE OR IMMATURE SEXUAL OBJECTS.
