SURVEY OF EXISTING AND SUGGESTED METHODS OF EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ON THE ISSUES, PROCEDURES, AND PROBLEMS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
ANY OVERHAUL OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM WILL DEPEND ON A WELL-INFORMED, CONCERNED PUBLIC OPINION. THE PUBLIC IS CONCEIVED OF AS A BROAD SPECTRUM OF THE MINIMALLY CONCERNED, THE PERIPHERALLY INVOLVED, THE PRIVATE VOCATIONALLY INVOLVED, THE CIVIC MINDED ACTIVISTS, AND THE OFFICIALLY RESPONSIBLE. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS SHOULD BE TAILORED TO THE DIFFERING NEEDS OF EACH GROUP. EXAMPLES ARE PUBLIC SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY INSTRUCTION, NEIGHBORHOOD DISCUSSION GROUPS, MEDIA INSTRUCTION, ACTION PROGRAMS, REALITY EXPERIENCES, AND JUDICIAL-CORRECTIONAL CONFERENCES FOR PROFESSIONALS. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES ILLUSTRATIVE PROGRAMS IN WHICH HE HIMSELF HAS PARTICIPATED AND INCLUDES A 54-ITEM BIBLIOGRAPHY.
