This report summarizes the inmate assaults, escape attempts, and other extraordinary incidents that occurred in Kentucky correctional institutions in 1986.
Abstract
Data came from the reporting forms prepared by each institution. The larger maximum-security and medium-security institutions experienced more incidents than other facilities. Sixty percent of the incidents took place at the Kentucky State Reformatory and the Kentucky State Penitentiary. The majority of incidents in the minimum-security facilities involved attempted escapes, escapes, and apprehensions of escapees. A total of 934 reported incidents took place during the year, an increase from the previous year. The incidents included deaths, escapes, assaults on staff, inmate assaults, medical incidents involving serious injury, the use of force by staff, and miscellaneous incidents. Figures, data tables, and discussions of each type of incident and characteristics of incidents at each facility.
