This dissertation compares organizational aspects of the Dutch and English police systems.
Abstract
The Dutch police system is undergoing an extensive reorganization process. The existing 148 municipal police forces and the State police will change to 25 regional forces and a national force. The police system in England and Wales, with 41 provincial forces and London police, is similar to that of the Netherlands. The study of the Dutch police system looks at the way management development will be implied in the reorganization and whether a link will be established between management development and strategic policy. Specifically, the study examines human resource management, the internal labor market, and types of management development. The English police system is examined in terms of its constitutional position, police training, and career development. The Dutch police system is evaluated with regard to structure and organization, dualism, and police training. Recommendations to facilitate the inclusion of management development strategies in police organizations are offered. References and illustrations
