This document presents adult corrections statistics for the State of Washington Department of Corrections for Fiscal Year 2004.
Abstract
The grand total for facility confinement as of January 2004 was 16,225 for males. The operational bed capacity was 14,826 inmates. For females, the grand total for facility confinement was 1,324. The operational bed capacity was 1,198. Of the total of 16,219 inmates, 11,611 were White, 3,383 were Black, 1,639 were Hispanic, 645 were Native American, and 429 were Asian. Of the total of 16,219 inmates, most inmates committed drug offenses, followed by assault, robbery, and murder. The average age of inmates was 30 to 34 years, followed by 25 to 29, and 35 to 39. Most admissions occurred in October 2003. Most releases occurred in July 2003. Most admissions were new admissions and male. Most releases were to community custody for both males and females. Community custody is the portion of an offender’s sentence served in the community after confinement, where controls are placed on their movements and activities by the Department of Corrections. Discharge was the second most common method of release. The average length of stay was 12.1 months. 34 tables, 3 charts
