Abstract
To compensate for outdated data gathering, program evaluation, and communication systems, the Washington State Department of Corrections created a proactive approach to employee training and development and a set of tools to get the job done well. One of these tools was the Staff Training System (STS), based on expanded staff access to information and resource sharing through an enhanced internal electronic mail system. To meet the demands of tremendous growth and change, the Missouri Department of Corrections developed its workforce diversity. The DOC attained its goal of diversity through innovative recruitment strategies and enhanced efforts to retain good employees. The Florida Department of Corrections used strategic planning to implement its commitment to develop a quality work force. As part of its program, the DOC initiated a supervisory training program for female correctional officers on managing diversity.
