THE FACSIMILE SYSTEM (FS) USED BY THE POLICE IN JAPAN, ALONG WITH THE TELEPHOTOGRAPHY SYSTEM, IS VIEWED AS AN EFFECTIVE MEANS OF COMMUNICATION IN POLICE ACTIVITIES.
Abstract
THE HIGH-SPEED FS IS DESIGNED TO FACILITATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND RECEPTION OF MESSAGES WITH MULTIPLE ADDRESSES OR WITH PATTERNABLE ADDRESSES IN A TIMELY MANNER, TO REDUCE TRANSMISSION TIME AND IMPROVE TRANSMISSION CAPACITY, TO PROVIDE THE CAPABILITY FOR RAPID TRANSMISSION OF TELEGRAMS, AND TO EXPAND THE HANDLING CAPACITY FOR TRANSMISSION ORIGINALS. THE STORE AND FORWARD EXCHANGE SYSTEM OF THE TRANSMISSION NETWORK USES FOUR-WIRE RELAY EXCHANGE UNITS, WITH EQUIPMENT LOCATED AT NATIONAL AND REGIONAL POLICE STATIONS. A FACSIMILE SIGNAL IS ELECTROMAGNETICALLY STORED. WHEN A BUSY LINE BECOMES FREE, THE FACSIMILE SIGNAL IS PLAYED BACK AND TRANSMITTED TO THE RECEIVING STATION. THE HIGH-SPEED FS OF THE TRANSMISSION NETWORK IS A SIMULTANEOUS DATA TRANSMISSION SYSTEM. CONNECTION CONTROL EQUIPMENT WITH MEMORY CIRCUITS IS LOCATED AT NATIONAL AND REGIONAL POLICE STATIONS. THE TELEPHOTOGRAPHY SYSTEM OF THE TRANSMISSION NETWORK USES THE CIRCUIT CONNECTION FUNCTION OF THE STORE AND FORWARD EXCHANGE SYSTEM. FACSIMILE MESSAGES HAVE THREE CLASSIFICATIONS (ABSOLUTE PRIORITY, URGENT, AND NORMAL). TRAFFIC HANDLED BY ALL SYSTEMS IN THE TRANSMISSION NETWORK INVOLVES ABOUT 10-MILLION FACSIMILE DOCUMENTS AND 340,000 TELEPHOTOGRAPHS PER YEAR. ILLUSTRATIONS ARE INCLUDED. (DEP)
