SOCIOLOGICAL AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF 80 CASES OF HOMICIDE TRIED IN FLORENCE, ITALY, BETWEEN 1951 AND 1963, WITH THE CONCLUSION THAT NO GENERAL STATEMENT CAN BE MADE REGARDING MOTIVATION ON THE BASIS OF THIS ANALYSIS.
Abstract
STATISTICAL INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF THE OFFENDERS, INCLUDING THEIR RELATIONS WITH THE VICTIMS, AND ON THE LOCATION THE CRIME, THE TIME OF YEAR, AND THE LENGTH OF THE TRIAL. INFORMATION IS ALSO PROVIDED ON THE OFFENDERS' BEHAVIOR BEFORE AND AFTER THE OFFENSE AND ON APPARENT MOTIVES AND MEANS EMPLOYED. THE DEGREE OF VIOLENCE IS DISCUSSED, WITH A DISTINCTION BEING MADE BETWEEN HOMICIDE WITH A PISTOL, WHERE THE OFFENDER DOES NOT ACTUALLY TOUCH THE VICTIM, AND SUCH METHODS AS STRANGULATION, THE USE OF KNIVES OR BLUNT INSTRUMENTS, ETC. THE RESULTS OF PSYCHIATRIC EXAMINATIONS OF 45 OF THE OFFENDERS INCLUDED IN THE ANALYSIS ARE ALSO GIVEN. APPENDIXES PROVIDE STATISTICS RELATED TO THE ANALYSIS AND A REPRODUCTION OF THE FORM USED IN ITALY TO RECORD INFORMATION IN CONNECTION WITH TRIALS FOR HOMICIDE. SEVEN CASE HISTORIES ARE ALSO INCLUDED. --IN ITALIAN
