The viability of a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)-based scale for identifying incest perpetrators was tested.
Abstract
Six MMPI items were applied to a psychosexual evaluation of 89 male incest perpetrators and 81 male mental health outpatients with no known history of psychosexual disorders. The items reliably discriminated between the experimental and control groups. Only one, "I have never been in trouble because of my sex behavior," directly indicated sexual deviance. Albeit that the sample was small and not randomly selected, the conclusion that the MMPI has questionable utility in identifying incest perpetrators was consistent with that of previous research. MMPI use should be limited to the ideographic level; further research using more subjects and more MMPI items may prove meritorious. 3 tables and 25 references
