This book examines elder abuse as a criminal justice issue.
Abstract
The book attempts to: (1) develop a descriptive profile of elder abuse as reported to the New York Police Department; (2) expand the knowledge base of types of criminal offenses committed against older people by their offspring and identify frameworks for translating criminal justice terminology into categories of elder abuse already established by gerontologists, sociologists and protective service statutes; (3) test the hypothesis that it is possible to predict which elderly victims of domestic mistreatment who come to the attention of local law enforcement agencies will be willing to prosecute their abusers; and (4) use the findings of the study to make recommendations to the law enforcement and social service communities regarding collaborative efforts to increase the safety and quality of life of older residents in Manhattan.
