While the historical response to juvenile delinquency has been to remove the delinquent from the family and into an institution, the trend over the last two decades towards deinstitutionalization poses a major challenge for the juvenile justice system and community, who are unsure as to how to deal with the family.
Abstract
Little objective and systematic information is available concerning families of delinquents. It is hypothesized that the families are as heterogeneous as the juvenile delinquents, but the juvenile justice system assumes that they are necessarily dysfunctional. A 10-point continuum is proposed which would assess each family's potential for rehabilitating the delinquent. 2 notes, 25 references. (Author abstract modified)
