Abstract
Fundamental is the social context in which family violence occurs and is generated. Consequently, the first four chapters of the text focus on issues pertaining to the status of women, the nature of the family, and the distribution of power within gender relationships. Subsequent chapters address the needs of the victims and the ways services can best provide safety and support; relevant issues in the law, including legal remedies now available throughout Australia; and the experience of child victims of sexual assault. The text challenges the traditional separation of the fields of child protection and family violence prevention. 563 footnotes and 11 tables
