Abstract
There were 21,250 incidents of family violence in which at least 1 person was arrested during 1991, and 21 homicides were committed. In 40.8 percent of cases of family violence, the most serious offense for which an arrest was made was assault. Incidents in which serious injury occurred declined 6.6 percent since 1990. For 46 percent of victims, their relationship to the offender was "live in": 81 percent of the victims were female, and 87.1 percent of offenders were male. Children were present or involved directly in 44.5 percent of incidents of family violence. The rate of family violence homicides increased by 5.0 percent from the number committed during 1990. Half of the 21 family or household members who were victims were female; 43 percent of the victims were relatives. Females accounted for three (14.3 percent) of the family violence homicide offenders. Guns or knives were used in 76.2 percent of the family violence homicides. A family or household member was arrested for 17 homicides. 9 figures and 13 tables
