THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF FAMILY STRESS AS THE TRIGGER FOR THE RISING INCIDENCE OF FAMILY VIOLENCE ARE EXAMINED IN THIS AUDIOCASSETTE AND FILM STRIP SERIES FOR TEACHERS AND EDUCATORS.
Abstract
FAMILY VIOLENCE HAS OCCURRED THROUGHOUT HUMAN HISTORY. IN RECENT YEARS, HOWEVER THE EXTENT OF THE VIOLENCE AND THE BURDENS WHICH IT PLACES ON ITS VICTIMS AND ON SOCIETY HAVE BEEN MORE CLEARLY REALIZED. THIS VIOLENCE CANNOT BE DISMISSED AS A 'FAMILY AFFAIR' THAT IS HIDDEN WITHIN THE WALLS OF THE HOME. SCHOOL TEACHERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE THE SYMPTOMS OF CHILD ABUSE, AND BE ABLE TO RESPOND WITH COMPASSION AND UNDERSTANDING. THIS FILMSTRIP SERIES COVERS THESE ISSUES IN FAMILY VIOLENCE AND ALSO EXAMINES (1) SOME OF THE ROOT CAUSES OF VIOLENCE WITHIN THE FAMILY, ESTIMATING THAT AS MANY AS FIVE MILLION AMERICAN CHILDREN ARE NEGLECTED OR ABUSED EACH YEAR; (2) THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A TYPICAL SPOUSE ABUSER; (3) THE CAUSES AND RESULTS OF THE GROWING PHENOMENON OF CHILD ABUSE, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE SEVERAL MANIFESTATIONS OF TEENAGER ABUSE; AND SOURCES OF RELIEF AND REHABILITATION AVAILABLE TO BOTH VICTIMS AND OFFENDERS. STUDY GUIDE MATERIAL INCLUDES THE CASSETTE TRANSCRIPTS, SUGGESTED CLASS ACTIVITIES, AND ADDRESSES OF ASSISTANCE AGENCIES. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS PROVIDED. (SEE NCJ-60831, 60832, 60833, 60834.) (TWK)
