Abstract
Family violence, the mistreatment of one family member by another, can take on many forms: physical abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and domestic violence. Other topics covered here include sibling abuse, incest, and elder abuse. Each chapter begins with a scenario, expressed in terms that can be understood by a child, followed by a series of questions and answers relating to the incident described, the factors that may lead to that type of abuse, and ways in which children can seek help. Signs of each type of abuse are listed at the end of the chapter. The final chapter recommends ways to improve self-esteem: acceptance, praise, time, encouragement, realistic goal-setting, respect, trust, and love of self.
