This handbook for human service professionals in North Carolina provides information to sensitize them to early warning signs of domestic violence, to acquaint them with their legal responsibility in this area, to prepare them to help someone in an abusive situation, and to guide them in raising public awareness of the problem.
Abstract
An overview of the nature and extent of family violence is followed by a focus on child abuse and neglect. The latter covers who must report child abuse and neglect, the acts or conditions that must be reported, the definition of a 'neglected juvenile,' and how to report child abuse and neglect. Also discussed are what happens after a report is made, legal protection for those who report, the consequences of not reporting, warning signs of physical or sexual abuse, and how to respond to the child. A discussion of spouse abuse exposes some of the myths about spouse abuse, signs of spouse abuse, and the services available. The handbook concludes with a discussion of the reporting of elder/handicapped abuse and neglect, the warning signs of such abuse, and a list of services. State resources for domestic violence are listed.
