This report reviews in detail the causes and results of fatal motor vehicle accidents occurring in New Jersey in 1991. There was an 11 percent decrease in fatalities over 1990, which the New Jersey State Police attribute to continuing alcohol awareness programs, enforcement of the 55-mile-per- hour speed limit, and the safety belt use law.
Abstract
During the reporting period, there were 744 fatal accidents in New Jersey with a total of 790 victims. Of the fatal accidents, 33.4 percent were alcohol-related and 14.4 of the drivers were legally intoxicated. There were 47 motorcyclists involved in fatal accidents, 20 pedalcyclists, and 178 pedestrians. There were 26 hit-and-run accidents during 1991. Over 83 percent of the fatal accidents occurred during clear weather; 70 percent involved passenger cars and 21 percent involved trucks. The report tabulates statistics on accidents and fatalities by month, accident victim classification by month and by county, fatalities and injuries according to accident type classification, hours of occurrence, weather conditions, and day of occurrence. Other factors considered included age of driver victims, age of pedestrian victims, condition of all drivers, victim alcohol factor, manner of collision, type of vehicles involved, character of road, road designation, age and sex of drivers, and contributing circumstances.
