This report presents statistical information regarding fatal motor vehicle accidents in New Jersey during 2004.
Abstract
During 2004, there were a total of 42,636 people killed in motor vehicle accidents nationwide. In New Jersey, there were 684 fatal accidents resulting in 723 deaths in 2004, which indicates an increase of 18 fatal accidents and a decrease of 12 fatalities compared to 2003 data. Of the motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey during 2004, 425 were drivers, 131 were passengers, 151 were pedestrians, and 16 were pedalcyclists. Of all the fatalities, 605 were tested for alcohol: 193 (31.9 percent) tested positive to some degree. Of the 425 drivers killed, 372 were tested for alcohol and other drugs; 121 (32.5 percent) were positive to some degree for alcohol while 11.4 percent were legally intoxicated. There were 42 fatal hit-and-run accidents in New Jersey during 2004 involving 55 vehicles and resulting in the deaths of 29 pedestrians, 8 passengers, and 7 drivers. Straight roads were involved in 57.8 percent of all fatal accidents, 85.3 percent occurred during clear weather conditions, and 74.7 percent involved male drivers.
