STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF LONG-TERM IMPRISONMENT ON THE CHANCES OF READAPTATION TO SOCIETY AFTER RELEASE. DATA WERE GATHERED FROM SEVENTY CASES OF PERSONS RELEASED AFTER TWENTY YEARS.
Abstract
AFTER REVIEWING THE RELEVANT LITERATURE, THE AUTHOR DEALS WITH THE ORGANIZATION AND METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY. SHE GIVES A BRIEF SURVEY OF THE LEGAL ASPECTS OF A LIFE SENTENCE, DEALS WITH DIFFERENT STAGES OF SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT DURING SUCH A LONG-TERM IMPRISONMENT, AND EXPLAINS THE FUNCTIONING OF THE GERMAN SYSTEM OF PARDON. IN THE LAST PART THE VARIOUS ASPECTS OF REHABILITATION ARE DEALT WITH. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY INDICATE THAT THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT LONG TERM IMPRISONMENT LEADS TO IRREVERSIBLE PERSONALITY DEFECTS WITH EMOTIONAL OR SOCIAL REDUCTION OR EVEN LOSS OF FLEXIBILITY. --IN GERMAN
