Police agencies that responded to a faxback survey by the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin regarding their use of the Internet in communicating with citizens reported extensive use and positive responses from citizens.
Abstract
Both large and small urban and rural police agencies have established home pages. The home pages provide basic information such as the agency's mission statement, a brief history of the department, and a message from the commanding officer. Agencies also feature local fugitives, crime prevention tips, and crime tip hotlines. Some agencies use the Internet to obtain product information or simply to contact other police agencies. The majority of responding agencies provided a list of State and local criminal laws. Many agencies use their Internet sites to provide citizens with detailed information about criminal activity occurring in the community. Departments also use the Internet to streamline operations and information dissemination by including recruiting information, online forms for bicycle registrations, and press releases. Some agencies include interactive approaches such as e-mail, e-mail with voice boxes, e-mail conferences, and computerized information kiosks. List of responding agencies
