Abstract
"Working Toward the Truth in Officer-Involved Shootings" emphasizes that law enforcement agencies must recognize and address the many factors that influence officers' memories in the aftermath of their involvement in a shooting. "Synthetic Marijuana" explains why police officers must be aware of the Drug Enforcement Administration's recent (2011) temporary placement of five specified chemicals into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. These substances produce drug-like effects that resemble those produced by tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Called "synthetic marijuana," this drug combination has resulted in an increasing number of emergency room visits since 2009. "Indian Country and the Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010" explains how this legislation has provided Indian country with needed improvements in the criminal justice system by increasing tribal jurisdiction and tribal court authority over felony crimes in which sentencing is limited to up to 3 years imprisonment. An article presented under the theme of "leadership" explains the importance of persistence by those responsible for leading significant change in an organization that poses strong resistance and challenges. Under the theme of "Perspective," an article on "Leading Through Difficulty and Loss," provides guidance for those who must lead an agency through healing and recovery after an officer is killed in the line of duty.
