This book examines the causes and effects of sexual and other assault of inmates aged 18 to 25 in New South Wales prisons and suggests potential remedies.
Abstract
The book is based on a questionnaire administered to 300 inmates aged 18 to 25 in New South Wales prisons in 1994 and 1995. The study attempted to determine: (1) the extent of sexual and other assaults on inmates aged 18 to 25 in New South Wales prisons; (2) risk factors for sexual assault of those young men; (3) the causes of sexual assault in prison; (4) the effects of sexual assault on the victims and, ultimately, on society; and (5) what legal, policy and administrative measures can reduce sexual assault in prison. The book presents recommendations for the housing of prisoners, training of prison officers, classification of prisoners, conjugal visits, counseling of victims, education of prisoners, and further research and harm reduction with respect to disease. It also recommends legal change in areas of sentencing and prisoners’ rights. Tables, references, bibliography, index
