Michigan's Committee on Juvenile Justice and Office of Criminal Justice sponsored workshops for the law enforcement community on how to cope with Federal mandates in handling juvenile offenders.
Abstract
Workshops focused on the legal liability of locking up juveniles, the removal of juveniles from adult facilities, and alternatives to incarcerating juveniles. Guidelines resulting from the workshops focused on the processing and custody of status offenders, juvenile apprehension, runaways, curfew violations, alcohol possession, the handling of confined juveniles, and the role of private security firms in handling juveniles. The guidelines are consistent with Federal regulations. Michigan resources for runaways and for the nonsecure supervision of preadjudicated juvenile offenders are listed, along with juvenile holdover facilities in Michigan.
