These statistical tables detail the numbers and characteristics of inmates and personnel of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for fiscal year 1989.
Abstract
The descriptive information on inmates covers race, age, offense, sex, institution assignment, security level, judicial district in which the offenders were tried, and combinations of these variables. The descriptive information on staff covers the composition of staff at the different facilities, regions, and security levels and includes data on race, educational level, sex, length of employment, job grade, and other characteristics. A narrative summary notes that the inmate data came from SENTRY, the Bureau of Prisons' on-line information system, while the staff data came from the JUNIPER database. The majority of inmates were sentenced in United States District Courts throughout the country after being found guilty of a Federal offense. The Bureau provides a wide variety of institutional settings and operates many programs, both inside and outside the institution environment. Most Bureau employees work in institutions. The Bureau uses a unit management approach in its facilities. Tables
